The Assistant Superintendent of Utilities role will supervise the
efficient operation, maintenance, housekeeping and safety of the
Mill Electrical Distribution operation while monitoring the
Electrical Dispatch of Power throughout the Paper Mill and the tie
with PJM. Gives technical assistance to all areas and follows all
capital and maintenance work being completed on the electrical
distribution system in the entire Power and Steam Department.
Duties & Responsibilities Oversees the Electrical Distribution
throughout the Mill operations and balances the dispatching in the
most cost-efficient way.
Tracks the sale of excess power to the Met-Ed 115KV grid to ensure
the contractual obligations are being met and the maintenance is
being performed on a timely basis.
Makes sure the turbine generators are scheduled for overhauls in
the proper cycle to show good maintenance practices and compliance
to all applicable codes.
Oversees all electrical capital work in the department either
personally or by assignment of another supervisor.
Conducts required operator training for NFPA 70E requirements.
Conducts operational training for safe electrical equipment
operation i.e., breaker racking, etc.
Performs periodic visual checks on equipment at substations and
utility power lines.
Recommends upgrading and training for personnel.
Issues requisitions for maintenance supplies and materials.
Monitors the vacation scheduling for the hourly and salary to see
that the vacations are not a problem during the Annual and CoGen
shutdowns. Makes sure that supervision is properly covered during
the year.
Works to ensure that the highest level of communications is being
followed throughout the department to keep the information flow
between the union and supervision at the highest level.
Reviews and prepares budget costs for the Powerhouse Turbine
Generators, Electrical Distribution Equipment, Turbine Generator 5,
and Turbine Generator 6.
Qualifications Experience - 5+ years related experience in a
manufacturing environment preferably in heavy industry. Pulp and
paper industry experience preferred.
Education - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering,
Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or Power Engineering. Engineer in
Training (EIT) or registered Professional Engineer (P.E) license is
preferred.
Competencies Ability to apply mathematical concepts and operations
related to engineering design, computational analysis, reliability,
and statistical methods, etc.
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a
wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific
equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases.
Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete
variables.
Working knowledge of power distribution systems up to 115 kV,
medium voltage distribution, arc flash studies and compliance, DCS
and PLC systems (programming not required), and protective relay
coordination.
Understanding of process control instrumentation (pH, conductivity,
flow, pressure, level, temperature, etc.)
Experience preparing engineering documentation such as loop
diagrams, P&IDs, interconnections, PLC/DCS, I/O drawings, power
plans, single line diagrams, etc.
Working knowledge of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)
relays at the operational and programming levels. Assist with the
commissioning of SEL relays.
NFPA 70E training.
Strong leadership skills. Results focused with demonstrated success
in execution. Extensive operational and engineering acumen,
experience and understanding of best practices.
Effective communication skills needed both internally and
externally at senior-management levels. Provides expertise to
teams, both internally and externally.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from
operators, maintenance, managers, regulatory agencies, or members
of the business community.
Ability to write technical documents and reports in prescribed
style and format.
Ability to effectively present information to top management,
public groups, and/or regulatory agencies.
Computer Skills MS Office Suite and MS Project proficiency
SAP familiarity a plus
AutoCAD familiarity to medium level proficiency
Work Environment Varies from office setting to loud, hot & humid
manufacturing environment both indoor and outdoor. Role requires
the ability to travel throughout the facility while using stairs,
ladders, elevated platforms, and elevators.
Must be able to maintain SCBA qualifications and use.
