Job Description Summary
Provide specialized veterinary clinical care to all species housed
in ULAR managed facilities. Under minimal supervision, provide
anesthesia to high risk and critical cases including placement of
IV catheters, intubation, and evaluation of anesthetic depth,
medication administration and extensive use of physiologic monitors
and interpretation of their parameters; may be able to run
anesthesia independently based on experience. Assist with aseptic
surgery, assure sterile conditions are maintained during
procedures. Utilize extensive knowledge of pharmacology and drug
calculations. Maintain anesthesia records. Ability to independently
function quickly and react to stressful situations involving
patient care. Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure
investigator adherence to approved protocols. Operate sterilization
equipment and prepare surgical instrument packs. Provide care to
critical animals in Intensive Care Unit. Triage and assess animal
health, provide care to colony cases. Perform colony treatments and
administer medications by oral, topical and injectable routes of
administration. Consult with clinical veterinary staff and
laboratory personnel on anesthesia and treatment options. Collect
specimens such as blood and feces. Prepare bills for treatments and
medications used to provide clinical care. Prepare daily treatment
roster of on-going cases using the computer. Maintain surgical
facility in accordance with current SOP's.
Job Description
PRINCIPAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES :
- 20% - Provide anesthesia to high risk and critical cases on an
independent basis. Evaluation of anesthetic depth, medication
administration and extensive use of physiologic monitors and
interpretation of their parameters. Maintain anesthesia records
15% - Consult with clinical veterinary staff and laboratory personnel on treatment and anesthesia options.
15% - Familiarity with IACUC protocols and assure investigator adherence to approved protocols. Trouble shoot new protocols to assure an understanding of what is required.
10% - Assure sterile conditions are maintained during procedures. Operate sterilization equipment and prepare surgical instrument packs.
10% - Provide care to critical animals in Intensive Care Unit and the colony. Triage and assess animal health, provide immediate care to emergency cases. Administer medications by oral, topical and injectable routes of administration. Maintain animal health records.
10% - Collect specimens such as blood and feces and perform diagnostic testing on samples such as parasite checks and identification
10% - Prepare bills for treatments and medications used to provide clinical care. Prepare daily treatment roster of on-going cases using the computer.
5% - Maintain surgical facility and radiograph area. Perform microbiological surface testing, assure facilities are maintained in accordance with current SOP's.
5% - Perform additional duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited animal health technology program or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience working with animals in a research setting and with at least 3 years of primary responsibilities in animal anesthesia management, or equivalent combination of education or experience for Anesthesia Veterinary Technician; 5 years of experience as above for the Senior Anesthesia Veterinary Technician. AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level, or a demonstrated commitment to attaining that certification within the time frame established by AALAS. The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills. Should exhibit familiarity with drug pharmacology and with an extensive variety of anesthetic protocols and should have the ability to respond to changing circumstances by being innovative and altering behavior to better fit different situations. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
